An unusual school trip
Hans Reichel (in Lederhosen) to the left of Alois Lang (middle), the Jesus actor of 1930 and '34, who spoke the prologue in 1950.
In 1950, the then 12-year-old Harald Reichel set out with his teacher and older fellow students to attend the Passion Play in Oberammergau. But they did not go by bus or train. No, the group covered the distance from Marktredwitz to Oberammergau by bicycle in several daily stages. If you were to travel by car today, it would only take three and a half hours to cover the 360 kilometres. On such an extensive cycling tour, both the legs and the bicycles needed some care. The return trip by train was much more comfortable. Many years later Harald Reichel visited the Passion Play again. But this time he went by car.
