Appeal to the public to participate

The exact number of actors for 2020 will be determined in the upcoming months. The participation call will commence on October 1st. Until March 31st, 2018, the inhabitants of Oberammergau are allowed to register for the participation in the Passion Play. But not everyone is allowed to join the actors. Only those who have been born and raised in Oberammergau or have lived in the village for at least 20 years can become part of the Passion Play cast.

For the actors of Oberammergau, things will become interesting in October 2018, when the “players’ selection” will take place: Aside from the renewal of the vow, it will be announced who is to receive the major and minor roles in the 42nd passion play. In late 2019 play director Christian Stückl will begin the rehearsals and work with his artistic team towards a new staging of the “play of the suffering, death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ”.

It’s not only the actors that are subject to the special rules of this play: Everyone involved must be a citizen of Oberammergau, from the controlling officer at the gates of the Passion Theatre to the scene shifter behind the stage.
