Eine Gebäude- und Rauminstallation zur Passion 2022
A building and room installation for the Passion Play 2022
April 23rd, 2022 - October 16th, 2022
The Oberammergau Museum, one of the most important cultural history museums in Bavaria, is being transformed into a spectacular complete work of art with building and space installations as well as an exhibition for the 42nd Passion Play with the title „(IM)MATERIAL – Fabric, Body and Passion“.
A large blue cube, made of the costumes worn by the lay actors of the Passion Play 2000 and 2010, cloaks the building and slices through the rooms within. The new tapestry-like walls transform the 1910 museum into an art object clearly visible from afar. The fabric stretches in the interior across all three floors, creating new spatial structures: a normal outside and an inside, which is distorted and unfamiliar. The visitor wanders between these worlds, entering and leaving the cube. Within, a small selection of exhibits is highlighted, exhibition objects are wrapped, changed and subjected to light projections. The core of the collection are wooden sculptures over four centuries that take as their theme the life, suffering, the fears, worries and the hopes of people and relate them to the Passion. By focussing the collection, the museum becomes a place of reflection on regional, cultural and societal notions and character.
The route through the exhibition begins at the crib section and leads through the historic rooms on the first floor, ending with a projection and sound installation in the roof space. On leaving, the visitor is given a piece of the cloth taken from the 2000 and 2010 Passion costumes– a symbol for (im)material exchange and community amongst people. Not least at all, this project is a homage to the museum’s collection and to popular art in general. It is a homage to the generations before us who, with courage and artistic sensibility, created beautiful artefacts in this barren region in order to survive.
